Thread: Need Help, Axle problems...

    Default Need Help, Axle problems...

So I try to replace the passenger CV axle (unequal style) because the inner boot is blown.
Well damned if the shaft that connects it (intermediate shaft?) isn't damn near fused to the CV.
So I need a new one, only thing I can find is a used piece in London.
The guy on the phone listed the condition as "good enough to work", arg...

I don't suppose anybody has one I can pick up or get shipped, the JY piece is going to cost me $70
I hate to pay that for a part with marginal life left in it.

But I'm stuck until I can finish this.

You could remove the hanger bearing bracket from the block and use a full length shaft. There's lots of those around in the junk yards if that's what you're looking for.
I don't have a low boost setting. Well, I do now, but it's for when I use nitrous.

    I wasjust thinking that...
I would grab a reman'd one, it's just a NA axle for same body, same year, correct?

Already spent a good deal of time tracking down the correct equal length axle.
    Trying to make this simple.

I forgot to mention it's a late build 86' sold as an 87', so the axles are 86'.
Is there a problem doing an unequal conversion with the small spline axles?

Okay, going with the unequal set-up.
    Anybody need my I-shaft/bracket/bearing?
I'll post them with pic's if they survive being separated.

I may have one at home. I switched from the small spline to the bigger spline for the
a-555. I know I have hanger bearings at home but I'm unsure of which and I may still have small spline shafts...I could check for you later today!

Sorry didn't mean to be confusing.
    I don't need them, I'm getting rid of the I-shaft/carrier bearing/hanger bracket
in favor of an unequal (long) shaft on the passenger side.
I was thinking more for anyone who might need mine...lol

Plus it will help recoupe the cost of the new axle as I can't get my core fee back with a short axle.
    Thanks though, much appreciated.

Oh I wasn't confused, just thought you may reconsider. Unequal length shafts have a tendancy to cause more torquesteer. I thought if I caught you in time you could continue with the equal length setup.

    Guess I was confused then...lol
I know the equal length set-up reduces torque steer and works well.
In the end for me it's a daily driver and the unequal set-up has less fail points.
Thank you for the offer though, I appreciate it.

I'm pretty sure I have two new small spline intermediate shafts in my garage if you still need one. I can check tonight and let you know.
